Historia Completa

Cristian Navarro, left, was excited to make the Varsity team as a Freshman.

The temperature was a stifling 103 degrees on the first day of Patriot High’s football practice, of which Cristian Navarro was a participant. It was undoubtedly a sweltering temperature for sports and ultimately led to the tragic wrongful death of Cristian Navarro. Practice consisted of conditioning drills like “suicides” and sprints in the hot weather. The field had no areas of shade and no sources of cold drinking water. Cristian’s coaches ordered him to finish the intense training session despite the punishing heat. They also failed to provide adequate hydration, claiming COVID-19 protocols prevented them from doing so, despite JUSD representatives confirming no such protocols existed. At the training session’s conclusion, Cristian lay down and told coaches he was “tired.” Cristian required assistance to rise, as he could not stand on his own, and he could not answer questions about his age or name.

Resultados y por qué fueron importantes

The $9,000,000 settlement was one of the largest ever in California for a school-related wrongful death. It reflected:

  • Proof of systemic negligence: We uncovered internal contradictions in the school district’s COVID policy claims and a lack of emergency preparedness training for coaches.
  • Violation of athletic safety standards: We demonstrated that the school ignored basic heat-safety protocols — including hydration breaks, shaded rest periods, and access to medical help — all of which are required under state and district policy.
  • Recognition of emotional loss: The legal strategy emphasized not just Cristian’s death, but his promise, his dreams, and the irreplaceable role he played in his family’s life. This humanized approach was essential in achieving a higher settlement.

The result helped the family cover medical and funeral expenses, but more importantly, it honored Cristian’s memory and held the school accountable in a way that can help prevent similar tragedies.

What the clients have to say

"Cristian was our everything. We turned to Adamson Ahdoot not just for help, but for justice — and they delivered. They fought for Cristian’s memory, and for the truth. We’ll never forget what they did for our family."
